Description:
|
Chris makes contact with a young prostitute, Jemma Dyson, who has complained of being threatened by one of her clients from The Gotham City Club, the exclusive upmarket brothel where Jemma works. This client, David Stewart, says that he is being blackmailed over his attendance at the Club, and wants Jemma to call it off, or else. Jemma insists that she has nothing to do with the blackmail, and knows nothing about it.
David Stewart is interviewed and says he has nothing to do with the Gotham City Club. Harris points out to him that if he is being blackmailed, he should turn to the police rather than take matters into his own hands, but Stewart won’t budge. Jemma is too scared of Stewart to make an official complaint against him. Stalemate.
It is decided to send Angie undercover in the Club as a cleaner, but before she has a chance to get in there, Jemma is found with her tongue cut out. Stewart is interviewed again and argues his innocence. In the Club, Angie is interviewed by the Madam, Brenda Johnson, who is a formidable woman. Jemma decides that if she is given protection by the police she will name her attacker, and she writes Brenda’s name on a piece of paper. The Undercovers go out to bring Brenda in for questioning over the attack on Jemma and the blackmail of the Club’s clients, but Brenda has disappeared. She is found the next day in a dumpster with her throat cut.
As part of the Homicide investigation into Brenda’s murder, Chatterley interviews the Club’s owner, who turns out to be Steve Wylie, the brother of a man who was shot in an Undercover operation some weeks ago. Suddenly the surviving brother doesn’t look quite the cleanskin they had supposed him to be. Wylie protests his innocence. Angie goes back into the Club to bug the office and see what info she can glean from the workers. Angie discovers that the girls provide drugs to their clients, and then runs into Reg Masters, who is there as a client.
Masters is appalled at having been sprung there, but Harris manages to talk him into going undercover at the Club to follow up on the drugs angle. Masters is reluctant, not least because he has quite fallen for the dominatrix, Natasha, who he has been seeing regularly for months. Masters sets up a bulk buy with Wylie, through Natasha, but not before he has felt obliged to tell her that he is a cop, and give her his real name. Wylie seems suspicious, but the deal goes ahead. Wylie is brought down, and Masters takes delight in revealing his true identity to him.
Harris has been pursuing an investigation of his own - into the likely presence of a crooked cop on the team. He and Angie discover damning evidence against Megan, and in the process discover that she and Church are lovers. Church refuses to listen to reason and maintains his stance that Megan is innocent. Harris feels he has no choice but to deliver the final proof of Megan’s treachery.
